Why Troop 237

Troop 237 turns boys into leaders.  Our “boy-led” program emphasizes outdoor adventure, teamwork, leadership and community service while providing opportunities for young men to develop life skills and develop friendships that will last them a lifetime. We are very proud of our strong 60 year history of building leaders with over 200 scouts earning the rank of Eagle Scout with Troop 237.

Troop 237 has weekly meetings and also conducts recruitment activities to provide opportunities for you to learn more about us. Feel free to come by a meeting or attend a recruiting event to learn more.

Young Scouts headed out on the 'Sourdough' hike in the summer of 2018.  This will be the first backpacking experience and first overnight hike for most of these Scouts. Sourdough is a time honored tradition for new scouts at Troop 237 attending Camp Wolfeboro in the summer. Camp Wolfeboro is located in a spectacular river valley wildnerness around 30 miles east of the town of Arnold. This well equipped summer camp is on the banks of the of the cool and clear Stanislaus River in the Sierra Nevada Mountains

Troop 237 offers a hands-on experience in leadership. Scouts learn to take responsibility for themselves by taking on a position of responsibility in the troop to learn to lead and how to work as a team. The Troop and through the Golden Gate Area Council offers BSA run courses in leadership and other topics to both youth and adults. Scouting is a well established and world-class program that combines outings, serivce and campout opportunities.

The troop also provides opportunities to attend high adventure outings such as "Sea Base" sailing expeditions, "Northern Tier" canoe expeditions, "Philmont" trek expeditions and much more. These high adventure opportunities are age appropriate and safe. Scouts experience many adventures, all while providing valuable service to our community and valuable service to helping to protect and preserve our environment.

Troop 237 also offers fun BSA run summer camps for scouts of all ages. These camps are at Camp Wolfeboro high in the Sierras and at Catalina Island off the coast of Southern California.

Troop 237 also offers a robust and extensive 'Merit Badge' program to enhance broad learning experiences for all of our scouts in an amazing array of subjects. This list includes courses in camping, cooking, personal management, citizenship, swimming, snow sports, archery, shooting sports, rock climbing, mountain biking, leather work, motor boating, snorkling, astronomy, photography, financial management, internet safety and the list goes on. The BSA has over 135 merit badge subjects available and the troop is always looking for volunteers to teach new merit badges. The Troop summer camps are also an excellent place to earn fun and interesting merit badges with a large number on offer to our Scouts.

Come and be part of the Troop 237 experience!

Troop History

Boy Scout Troop 237 was chartered in May of 1953. It was sponsored by the Orinda Lions Club. For many years the troop met on Thursdays at the "Scout Hut," which was a small cabin adjacent to the parking lot at the Orinda Park Pool.  Other local Troop's 200, 207, 303, and Explorer Post 300 also used the cabin. Unfortunately the hut was condemned in 1972 and Troop 237 moved to St. Stephens Church for a few months, awaiting the opening of the Orinda Community Center. By this time, Troop 237 was incorporated and was sponsored by the Parents of Troop 237. In the spring of 1990 the Orinda Community Church became our sponsor and we moved to their Fellowship Hall for our meetings. The meeting day was changed to Mondays.

Troop 237 has many traditions, the longest being the father-son football "Turkey Bowl," which began in the late 50s and continues to be played today. Traditionally we gave a new scout the troop's arrowhead neckerchief slide when they joined the troop. Our navy blue colored troop neckerchiefs were introduced in the mid 90's, replacing the orange and black neckerchief. The 60th Anniversary celebration was held on September 29, 2013 at the Orinda Community Center with over 200 attendees!

Adult Volunteers

Troop 237 is fully run by volunteers and offers many opportunities for adults to volunteer and to lead. From Committee Positions, Assistant Scout Masters, Merit Badge Counselors, Outings Leaders and so much more. The troop and the BSA offers excellent training and support, There are many rewarding opportunities available to get involved as an adult volunteer with the troop.
